4/14/08 John Denver, Christopher McCandless and I hang out at the store.

I think John Denver is trying to speak to me through his old recordings. Well, maybe not, but here’s a coincidence for you: I was listening to John Denver in the store today. Two ladies walk in. One says, “Been a long time since I’ve heard John Denver.” I tell her that I’ve been on a John Denver kick lately, getting into that love-the-natural-world-around me-everything’s-far-out! mood. Lady says, “I spoke with John Denver on the phone once.” Of course, I wanted to know more! Apparently, her uncle was a musician who decided music wasn’t the future he wanted and went back to school, eventually earning a psychology degree; his music background gave him an “in” with musicians and, in the 70’s, he was John Denver’s Psychologist. One day, during the height of John Denver’s popularity, my customer’s uncle called up his niece and asked if she wanted to speak with John Denver. She says John got on the phone and told her hello. She said she was so nervous all she could think to say was, “I liked your Christmas Special on TV!” John replies “Far out!”

A couple friends stopped by the shop this afternoon. One mentioned his pool. Yep, it’s getting sunny & warm in northern Arizona. Today is the warmest day of the year thus far. Low eighties. Far out! (New sunglasses in contemporary styles in the shop now, and I’ve already noticed that teenage girls are drawn to sunglasses like the Millennium Falcon in a tractor beam. Sort of comical to watch.)

Big news for the art wall in the shop: Angie Lindley, a young quilt artist, just completed her first Sedona-themed quilt in what will be a Red-Rock Quilt series. Her Sedona-themed, hand-made quilts / wall hangings utilize hand-dyed fabrics to capture the colors of our Sedona landscape. Of course, Angie’s Sedona-themed quilts are only available at Sedona Green Gallery. (Prices start at just $465 Come check out Angie’s work.)

The House Elf and I watched Into The Wild. Loved it. Might have to buy the soundtrack. Still … man, reminds me of idealists and blaze-your-own path characters I’ve known in my life. Sad story … but at its heart, McCandless’ adventure was one of optimism, inspiration, self-challenge and self-discovery. The elf took off hitchhiking the next morning, and I haven’t seen him since.

Tickets for “Conversations in Music,” a piano concert with David Vincent Mils May 15th, 7:30 P.M. at Sedona’s Creative Life Center are now available at Sedona Green. $12. For mo’ info. Check out http://www.davidvincentmills.com/! I plan to attend. David is an amazing musician and a good friend of mine. No doubt, this will be THE show to see this spring.

Traffic flowing into Sedona is getting easier to navigate. ADOT is doing a good job to keep things moving. Just be careful if you’re heading to the Uptown Sedona Post Office. The new turn-off to the Post Office comes up on you quicker than the old turn-off, and I’ve noticed people are hitting the turn rather abruptly and zooming into the parking lot faster than they expect.

OK, it’s 4:00, and I haven’t had lunch yet, so the blog ends here. Blog more at y’all soon.

Next Sedona Green Blog scheduled for 4-21-08.

  1. That new post office road got me today. I’d been avoiding checking mail for a week. I didn’t even have time to put on my blinker b/c the driveway jumped out of no where. I hope everyone’s brakes behind me were up to par b/c I gave them no notice what so ever. For all that, I only had junk mail.
