4/21/08 One foot in front of the other
Crazy-busy this morning in Uptown Sedona, so this Monday blog will have to be quick.
- The weather in Sedona has been fantastic this April. 70’s, even 80’s every day. A bit of wind in the afternoons and light-jacket evenings. Ahhh, this is the time of year perfect for hiking … now if only I could escape the store occasionally to partake in a bit o’ hiking, myself. No complaints, though. Even when I’m confined to the store, I have a “wow” view of Snoopy Rock with the sunshine warming his round belly.
- Some goals, though overwhelming at first glance, can be achieved by simply placing one foot in front of the other — and repeating the process five million times. Finished reading two blog journals of past Appalachian Trail hikers this week. Grasshopper and Jersey Joe. I recommend them both. Grasshopper’s Journal. Jersey Joe’s Journal. Both have totally rekindled my ambition to … someday … hike the 2,174 mile Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. Who wants to come along? We could do it in 4 and a half months. Of course, there’s the AZ Trail, too. (Approx. 800 miles) Hummmm. Maybe I’ll try that one first.
- I’ve been making mental notes of what music in the store encourages the most sells. Well, the verdict is in: John Denver wins. Part of that is the sing-along familiarity of many of his songs; of course, the age demographic of the typical Sedona tourist works into the formula. The majority of tourists experienced the 70’s fondly. A couple days ago, one lady even hurried out to the shop’s balcony and yelled down to her husband: “You’ve got to come up here! They’re playing John Denver!” Gave me a chuckle. Far Out! I really didn’t discover John Denver’s songs until long after his popularity was history. A girl I knew back in college told me that John Denver was her favorite singer, so … a few years later, I remembered that and gave him a listen. A couple years after that, my sister (who had also discovered John Denver during her college years) gave me a John Denver CD. I sort of got hooked. The easy-listening quality underneath lyrics that describe nature’s majestic imagery and love’s parallels to those sweeping images … it works. Sells are good when John Denver is in the store CD player.
I co-hosted open mic last Tuesday with CFG. Afterward, one of my friends decided she wanted to grab a bite to eat. Problem: it was 11 P.M. After a bit of driving back and forth, we discovered that there is absolutely no place to grab a bite after 11 on a Tuesday in Sedona. Red Planet Diner, switched off their OPEN sign just as we walked up to the entrance door. Hideaway stays open later on Thursdays through Saturdays; however on a Tuesday, even the grocery stores close at 11. Yes, we tried Circle K, but they had turned off their hot dog machine. I love this town, but we could sure use a 24-hour Chinese take-out.
100% Organic Snoopy Rock Tess coming very soon! Also, new hats should arrive Tues. or Wednesday. These feature the lucky Sedona Green logo on blues and reds. OK, lots to do and customers keep interrupting my blogging today, so I best let you go.
